About Klipnote

We're developing a recommendation engine built to tackle one of the trickiest challenges in the audiovisual world: how to match a film with the topic of a course, lecture, or class.

The Traditional Way

Ask knowledgeable people. Get help from librarians or media specialists. Ask colleagues. Search by keywords. Post in social media groups or professional forums.

All are valid answers... but it's a long, exhausting process. The results? Sometimes off target, and often quite limited. We tend to recycle the same "canon" of films, creating narrow horizons.

Thematic Matching with AI

Klipnote is designed for <span className='font-semibold'>thematic</span> matching, not emotional mood swings. An academic course doesn't need a film you <em>feel like</em> watching - it needs a film that fits the <em>topic</em>. When chosen right, such a film can spark discussion, shed light on a concept, illustrate an abstract idea, support a claim, or offer a new audiovisual angle.

Enter Artificial Intelligence

Sure, plenty of recommendation engines already exist. But most work like this: "If you liked Film A, you might love Film B (film to film recommendations)." Or: "You like horror movies (genre-driven recommendation)" or "You're in the mood for a romantic comedy tonight."

That's fine for entertainment, but an academic course doesn't need a film you feel like watching—it needs a film that fits the topic.

That's where our system, <span className='font-semibold'>Klipnote</span>, comes in: it's designed for <span className='font-semibold'>thematic</span> matching, not emotional mood swings.

Where Do the Films Come From?

The engine itself is general-purpose, but we've started by connecting it to our own Movie Discovery catalog. We'll also support external catalogs—and if you know your way around code, you can even plug in your own.

Available Source for Everyone

Once development is complete, the code will be freely available on GitHub—including full setup instructions. You just can't sell it or charge people for access.

In every other sense, it's yours. Any institution or researcher can deploy the engine with their own film catalog, even an internal one (say, a university's self-produced films or internal collections). We'll also offer an optional paid setup service, but you don't have to use it. Everything can be done independently.

Flexible by Design

  • Choose your LLM — If you install Klipnote yourself, you can choose which LLM (large language model) it uses—local or cloud-based. If you go with the cloud option, you'll only pay the API provider, not us.

  • Modular architecture — We've built it modularly, so you can adapt each piece. Our catalog uses the MARC XML format (common in academic libraries) and we created a simple converter that turns MARC into CSV for easier machine learning use.

  • Full rebranding freedom — You can fully rebrand the interface for your institution. You can even remove our name. Open source means full freedom.

  • <span className='font-semibold text-[#69ECD9]'>Tweak the AI Weights</span> — Want to adjust the importance each factor has in generating a recommendation? Go ahead. We've shared our secret recipe in the code. Play with it until the results make you happy.

Privacy Matters

Klipnote doesn't store syllabi. We know that faculty treat their course outlines as their intellectual creations and we respect that. You can verify this yourself, because the source code is available.

The engine can also be used completely anonymously. You don't even need to log-in, unless you want to save your lists.

At any point, you can delete your recommendations and all your data (a.k.a. the right to be forgotten).

A Small Reminder

There's an old saying in computing: Garbage in, garbage out.

In other words, poor input equals poor output. For good recommendations, both the film descriptions and course outlines need to be written with care.

Try It Yourself

As of early 2026, the system is still improving and the interface evolves constantly. Thanks for your patience. We promise it's getting better by the week.
